voltaic cell is created whenever dissimilar metals, connected in some way, are immersed in a conductive fluid.

Figure 1 shows a voltaic cell created using lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn), immersed in conductive solutions containing either aqueous (dissolved in water) lead or aqueous zinc.

When the switch is closed, electricity flows through the wire and is measured by the voltmeter, as shown in the diagram. Chemists measured the voltage that flowed through the circuit using various amounts of dissolved metals. Table 1 shows the results of the trials.
